CoreLogic has declared Jackson, Mississippi the windiest city in the US. The city posted a maximum wind speed of 99 miles per hour, and 153 significant wind events were recorded over the 9-year period of the survey.

CoreLogic’s Windy City Ranking study came up with the classification by computing for the total force caused by all severe wind gusts of 60 mph or more for every wind event since 2006. For purposes of the study, areas within a 10-mile radius of each surveyed city were also considered as part of that city. The study also accounts for the total number of wind events in ranking the 293 cities analyzed.

Core Logic’s wind verification technology gathers wind data at a “property-specific level,” instead of relying on traditional observation methods, the company said.

“With such a significant percentage of insurance claims attributed to wind, CoreLogic’s wind verification technology allows insurance professionals to verify if and when severe winds were detected at or near a specific location in order to make more precise damage assessments.”

Core Logic said wind damage represents 20 to 30% of all insurance claims each year, according to estimates by the insurance industry.

Shreveport, LA was ranked the 5th windiest city in the US.
