The United States Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency issued a reminder to producers in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan that the final date to apply for insurance coverage for certain crops and vegetables is March 15.

Changes to crop insurance coverage have been made for 2016’s crop year.

According to program standards, the vegetables and crops that producers can apply for insurance coverage for are spring barley, Burley tobacco, cabbage, corn, cucumbers, dry beans, forage seeding, grain sorghum, green peas, hybrid seed corn, oats, popcorn, potatoes, processing beans, processing pumpkins, processing sweet corn, processing tomatoes, soybeans, and sugar beets.

Those current policyholders who want to adjust their policies may also do so until the sales closing date.

Crop insurance offers producers financial protection in the event of drought, excessive moisture, and other similar conditions that could endanger crop production. There are a number of coverage options in crop insurance, such as area risk policies, revenue protection, yield coverage, and so on.
