Malware may have infected hundreds of thousands of Apple devices
A cyber security firm says it has identified a new malicious software infection that may have targeted hundreds of thousands of Apple devices. Palo Alto Networks has named the bug WireLurker as it infects mobile devices via a USB connection to an infected computer and steals data from the mobile device. A spokesman for the firm says it is “like nothing we’ve seen before” in terms of its targeting of iOS and OS X systems. The malware is causing problems largely in China currently but Palo Alto says cyber hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Apple says it has blocked the malware to stop it from working. Former security secretary says we can deal with cyber threat
A former government official has given an upbeat keynote speech to delegates at the Advanced Cyber Security Center’s annual conference. Michael Chertoff who was security secretary at the US Department of Homeland Security says that despite some high-profile data breaches including retailers, banks and even the White House, the threat can be dealt with. However he stressed that it was not something that can be left to governments; enterprises must do all that they can to mitigate the risk. Chertoff also highlighted the need for co-operation between the cyber-security industry, governments and business. Read the full story
 
UN leads drive to work towards zero casualties
Forty city officials from China, Japan and Republic of Korea this week joined in a toast “to work towards zero casualties from disasters” as the countdown continues to the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Japan next March.  The three countries are home to 22 per cent of the world’s population, much of it in urban areas, and collectively are also responsible for 20 per cent of global trade volume. Several cities in North-East Asia are highly exposed to natural hazards. Increasing the disaster risk management capacity of municipalities has emerged as a major theme of the post-2015 international framework on disaster risk reduction. Read the full story.
