Disney reveals the magic behind its supply chain risk management
The recent port strikes on America’s west coast caused chaos for hundreds of businesses as supply chains stalled. Disney though managed to keep its business supplied, thanks to insights it had gained from previous experience. The firm’s logistics projects manager David Croft spoke at a conference in Long Beach and said that after a similar disruption to the supply chain when he was with Motorola in 2002, he made sure Disney was ready. When the West Coast Port strikes hit the firm was ready to switch its inbound supplies to routes into Canada then rail to the US; guests were unaware of any issues. The key to this success story was awareness of risk; Croft and his Disney team were aware that the contracts were coming to an end at the ports three years ago and made sure they had alternative plans in place from then until the eventual strikes earlier this year. This Disney story was not about the ‘magic’ … just good old fashioned planning! Read the full story.

Not only are there the actual costs of recruiting replacements but also the damage to productivity and morale from a departing member of the team. Her advice: retain the talent that contributes the most to your team. She says that with employees who are a ‘flight risk’ it’s not always about money. Many feel undervalued or underused. ‘Glitter-bombing’ is health and safety risk
The world is full of new and emerging risks and here’s one you may not have considered. The Department of Public Safety in Texas has warned legislative staff of the dangers of “glitter-bombing”. The relatively recent phenomenon involves protestors showering the subject of their discontent with glitter, either in person or via spring-loaded dispensers sent in parcels. It is often used by gay-rights groups although they are not the only group to use the tactic. The risk has been flagged up to legislators and their staff after a number of politicians in the state became victims. The email highlights that glitter can be a health hazard if it enters the eyes, nose or lungs.
