Just a few weeks after North Carolina’s insurance commissioner warned of it, insurer UnitedHealth would no longer offer individual plans on the federal exchange for residents of the state, effective next year.

UnitedHealth was one of three insurance companies that offered plans on healthcare.gov for customers in North Carolina this year.

According to a report from local WNCT News, the insurer offered plans to select counties in Eastern North Carolina. With UnitedHealth’s withdrawal from the state’s market, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina will be the only insurance option for the northern region.

UnitedHealth joins Humana in dropping out of the health exchange for individual plans in North Carolina.

Despite its withdrawal from the individual plan market, UnitedHealth will continue to offer non-marketplace plans in the state.
