Being an insurance agent wasn’t originally one of Smith’s goals, but she’s very happy she made a career change more than 20 years ago. She encourages other agents to find their niche in the industry

How did you get your start in the insurance industry?
I got started in the business when I met VP Brenda Fields of Sedgwick (Sedgwick James & Marsh) in 1993 at a hair salon. I was looking for a career change from Office Manager of a micrographic company called Total Information Management Company (TIMCO).  She invited me to complete the application process at Sedgwick and I was in.
 
What do you think makes an ideal insurance agent?
An ideal insurance agent is a person who enjoys selling themselves and working hard at being the best at finding insurance coverage solutions for clients’ risk.
A good insurance agent/broker provides the same exemplary service for clients who have one small policy as he does for the affluent client who has multiple policies.  
 
If you could give one piece of career advice to aspiring insurance professionals, what would it be?
Find your niche in the industry, whether it’s personal, commercial, risk management, company or broker side get the education and designations and work your way to the top.  There are good paying six figure jobs at the top.
 
What's something most people don't know about you?
Most people don’t know I’m a licensed Real Estate Sales Person with an Associate Degree in Real Estate since 2005.
