Former Speaker of the House and Arizona State Rep. Andy Tobin will head Arizona’s Department of Insurance, Governor Doug Ducey announced last week.

Tobin has been the Director of the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures since January, but that department will be phased out next year. According to the Arizona Capitol Times, Tobin “helped shepherd through a Ducey-proposed bill to abolish the (Weights and Measures) agency and shift its various duties to other departments.”

According to a spokesperson for the Arizona DOI, Tuesday was Tobin’s first day in the office as the new director, and he expected to be ready to “hit the ground running” upon arrival in his new position.

Tobin is experienced in the insurance sector. According to his member page on the Arizona State Legislature’s website, he worked in banking and real estate lending before forming TLC Employee Benefits (also known as the Tobin/LeClaire Agency, according to its website) in Prescott, Ariz. Tobin is also the former CEO of Fortner Aerospace.

A Republican, Tobin was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2006 representing District 1, and was re-elected multiple times, most recently in 2012.

He replaces Germaine Marks, who resigned as director of the DOI earlier this year to accept a position in the private sector. Darren Ellingson was named acting director in August and filled the post until a permanent director was chosen.
