A late-night phone call has propelled GEICO to a policy milestone.

The company recently hit 16 million policies in force. The magic number was reached when Tucson sales agent Jeremiah Lizarraga sold a policy to a California customer at 1:01 a.m. EST on Monday. It’s the second milestone the insurer has reached this year; in January, GEICO sold its 15 millionth policy.

Lizarraga said that he had no idea when he sold the policy that it represented a company milestone.

“One day I returned from lunch and my supervisor was waiting at my desk with the good news,” he said. “We started to high-five each other and everyone was very excited. It took a moment for me to fully grasp what was happening. I’m absolutely stoked that I am a part of something as special as this.”

“We are extremely excited that the 16 millionth policy was sold by one of our sales agents here in Tucson,” said Martha Furnas, GEICO regional vice president. “Reaching this significant milestone in record-breaking time is a remarkable achievement and serves as a reflection of the hard work and tireless effort of our GEICO associates nationwide.”

This is actually the second time the Tucson office has been involved in a company milestone; the office also sold GEICO’s 11 millionth policy in 2012.

“We’ve had the privilege of hosting a pretty big milestone celebration a few years ago,” Furnas said. “We are definitely planning something special for 16 million to show associates our thanks and appreciation.”
