The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is advising people to secure flood insurance before another flood occurs; forecasts of a wet winter season has the agency understandably concerned.
Flooding is one of the top natural disasters in the country, yet statistics show that many ignore the risks associated with flooding, and thus do not find a need to purchase flood insurance.
In an effort to reverse such a trend, FEMA Region 6 officials in Denton, Texas are encouraging local citizens to get coverage for flood damage. FEMA’s warnings follow a recent flood prediction that could affect many parts of the country this winter.
Previously, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas all received major disaster declarations for flooding during spring and summer.
"Nobody here will forget the heartbreaking images from this spring's devastating floods," remarked Regional Administrator Tony Robinson.
Robinson added that while it is one thing to lose your family’s possessions to floodwaters, it is an even bitter tragedy to lack the insurance necessary to cover the replacement costs.
"Once you buy an insurance policy, it takes 30 days to go into effect - so the time to act is now, before the next heavy rains," he insisted.
Locals are urged to visit www.floodsmart.gov for more information on whether or not they are living in a flood-prone area, or how to get flood insurance.
