Alabama Governor Robert Bentley will resign amid allegations of wrongdoing rather than face impeachment, according to Reuters. The governor allegedly used a loan from an insurance policy to improperly loan himself campaign money.

The Alabama Ethics Commission said that Bentley loaned himself campaign money when he wasn’t a candidate, according to NBC affiliate Local 15.

“The loan to his campaign account was a loan taken by the governor from his insurance policy,” said David Byrne, Bentley’s chief legal advisor. “He contributed it to his own campaign.”

Byrne maintained that the loan wasn’t a violation of the law “in context,” according to Local 15.

Bentley originally came under fire for allegations stemming from a relationship with a former advisor. Last week, the state ethics commission recommended that he be charged with four felonies related to the affair, according to the Washington Post.

In addition to resigning, Bentley will plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to his alleged attempts to cover up wrongdoing, according to the Post.
