McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance, recently shared his “hot list” of collector cars to look out for in 2016. Using his knowledge of collector car valuation, Hagerty weighs in on which automobiles have the potential to become timeless classics.

The Michigan-based Hagerty Insurance Agency, LLC is a premier insurance company that specializes in offering insurance products for classic cars. The company serves the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

“Despite all the negative talk about the future of the car, this is one of the most exciting times to be a car enthusiast,” Hagerty stated in his Hagerty Hot List 2016, published Feb. 9 on the Hagerty Insurance website. He briefly discussed how the future of automobiles could lean towards driverless technology, but maintained that until true automation becomes more feasible, today’s cars will still remain relevant.

Hagerty’s list (in no specific order) enumerates the latest models with the potential to become instant hits with car enthusiasts. The cars are:
  • The Mazda MX-5 Miata, a model known for its consistent performance and reliability for a lightweight roadster. The latest model, Hagerty observed, is shorter but much nimbler than the previous model.
  • The Ford Focus RS, a 350hp compact rally spec beast with an all-wheel drive system. Hagerty remarked that the powerful Focus RS could serve as an alternative to those who missed Mitsubishi’s now-defunct rally staple, the Evo line.
  • The Chevrolet Camaro SS is the third car on the list for being a worthy successor to the Mustang legacy. The 455hp car boasts a 6.2L LT1 V8 engine and 55 lb-ft. of torque.
  • The BMW M2, successor to the well-received M1 Coupe. Hagerty notes the M2’s larger and more stylish profile compared to other cars in the series but praised how the car preserved the high performance the M Division is known for.
  • The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the Italian exotic sports car with a design that is anything but, makes the list. Its clean and simple design belies its top performance, comparable to a Ferrari 360 Modena.
  • The Porsche Cayman GT4, which repackages components from the latest 911 GT3 model into a smaller package. Hagerty reminds that Porsche’s high performance, low production models are always a hit.
  • The 2016 Dodge Viper SRT Coupe gets a mention. Hagerty added the car to his list for its sheer and unabashed use of a powerful 8.4-liter V-10.
  • The Cadillac ATS-V enters the list for its uncompromising use of a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Hagerty noted that the ATS-V could give the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 a run for their money.
  • The 2016 Lotus Evora 400 was chosen for its surprising speed and power, while keeping Lotus’ iconic lightweight design.
