After serving as interim commissioner since August, Jimmy Harris (pictured) has been officially appointed as Arkansas Insurance Commissioner by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, ensuring leadership continuity at the state agency following the retirement of Alan McClain.
Harris’ appointment, announced by the Arkansas Department of Commerce, formalizes a transition that began when McClain stepped down earlier this year after more than five years in the position. McClain’s term was originally scheduled to continue through 2027.
Harris joined the Arkansas Insurance Department (AID) in 2012 and has since held several leadership roles, including compliance director and deputy commissioner for market regulation. His tenure has provided him with experience in overseeing regulatory operations and addressing consumer protection matters within the insurance industry.
In his new capacity, Harris will direct the department’s ongoing work to regulate insurance companies across Arkansas, oversee the state’s workers’ compensation program, and investigate consumer complaints and insurance fraud. The agency is also responsible for providing Medicare counseling to senior citizens and ensuring the financial stability of insurers doing business in the state.
Gov. Sanders said Harris has played a significant part in efforts to protect consumers from unfair insurance price increases. “Jimmy Harris has been instrumental in our fight to protect Arkansas consumers from unfair insurance price hikes,” she said. “I’m proud that he has stepped up to take on this role and look forward to our continued collaboration on behalf of the people of Arkansas.”
Arkansas Secretary of Commerce Hugh McDonald said Harris’ long experience within AID and understanding of its operations make him well-suited for the position. McDonald said Harris’ familiarity with the agency’s mission positions him to lead its programs and regulatory responsibilities.
Harris said his focus as commissioner will be to safeguard Arkansas consumers and maintain a fair, stable insurance marketplace. He added that the department’s responsibilities reach nearly every resident in the state, including helping seniors with Medicare issues and ensuring that insurance companies meet their obligations.
“I’m honored to be appointed commissioner and lead a team so dedicated to serving the people of our state,” Harris said.
Harris was sworn in on November 5, continuing the leadership of the department without interruption following McClain’s retirement.
