Edwin L Stacy of Portland, Oregon this week was sentenced to 5 years’ probation and ordered to pay $50,877 to Red Shield Insurance Company as restitution for damages caused when the 58-year-old man blew up his apartment while making butane hash oil a year ago.

US District Judge Michael W Mosman noted that federal sentencing guidelines would suggest that Stacy spend time in prison, but that Mosman was giving him a break because of Stacy’s efforts to get his act together since the explosion.

The explosion happened early in the morning of Dec. 8, 2014 when Stacy filled a piece of PVC pipe with marijuana and butane gas to extract its oils, according to court documents.

“During this process,” according to the document obtained by OregonLive.com and other Oregon media, “the small apartment bedroom filled with butane gas fumes. Due to the volatile butane gas that had filled the small room, when the defendant lit a cigarette the gas ignited and the explosion occurred.

“The explosion was so severe the bedroom window was blown out and three of the four walls were blown out including the exterior wall of the bedroom. … The bedroom door was completely blown from the hinges. Defendant’s 12-year-old daughter was in a different bedroom of the apartment when the explosion occurred.”

Stacy was also ordered to pay $1,000 to cover the deductible paid to Red Shield by the owners of the apartment building.

Stacy has since moved and, according to his attorney, stayed away from drugs while trying to get back on the straight and narrow.
