After receiving a number of complaints from consumers, the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved discovered a scam, wherein an “aggressive marketer” claiming to represent the National Health Enrollment Center attempted to enroll consumers through a program other than the state’s health insurance exchange system.

The perpetrator also claimed to sell insurance coverage directly, tricking customers who did not want or did not have the time to peruse the exchange marketplace.

The National Health Enrollment Center is not affiliated with Kansas’ insurance exchange directly, nor does it make unsolicited calls to people. In recent weeks, the organization was under fire due to the aggressive calls seemingly made under their name.

State officials are worried that with the open enrollment period in full swing this December, more enrollment scams could appear.

Those responsible for the enrollment scam call using various phone numbers to obscure their location and identity, claimed the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved. The phone numbers of these swindlers can be manipulated to appear as local numbers, but might actually originate from out of state—even out of the country, authorities said.
