New York Life has kick-started the fundraising for the erection of a monument of two historical women in New York City’s Central Park with a $500,000 donation.

The statues will be of suffragettes Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. A budget of $1.5 million is earmarked for the project, and the New York Life donation will serve as a challenge grant which will match contributions from other donors up to $500,000.

“New York Life is pleased to join The Statue Fund in honoring women in history. In addition to our commitment to diversity and women’s issues, this grant was appealing to us due to the proud historic relationship New York Life had with the Anthony family,” Heather Nesle, president of the New York Life Foundation, told the Rochester Business Journal.

According to Nesle, Susan B. Anthony’s father and other relatives were New York Life agents, and the historical figure used money from her New York Life insurance policy to make sure female students were admitted to the University of Rochester.

“The Stanton and Anthony Woman Suffrage Movement Monument will ensure that many of the 42 million people who visit Central Park each year will become more aware of a history that fully and fairly includes the vast and varied roles women have played in it,” said Pam Elam, president of the Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Statue Fund Inc. in the report.

The monument was approved by the New York City Parks Department. The design will include statues of the two figures of Stanton and Anthony, accompanied by the names of other suffragists.
