Insurance companies make a big splash in latest Fortune 500 list

So no surprises there then as Warren Buffett’s  runaway Juggernaut of a company tops the Property and Casualty insurance table and ranks at number 4 overall in the country, edged out only by Walmart, Exxon and Apple, in that order. What might be an eye-opener for some, however is the sheer scale of Berkshire Hathaway’s lead over its competitors. Second on the P&C (stock) insurers is AIG, itself a colossus but nearly a quarter the size of Omaha’s finest.

Including the P&C insurers that are mutual garners us another seven on the list. State Farm boast the largest revenues and is only topped by Berkshire Hathaway overall

Of the whole P&C group, only one company also made it onto Fortune’s fastest growing 100 list – AmTrust Financial  headed by Barry D. Zyskind  made it on at #27 with revenues increasing 14.2% and profit showing a healthy 12.7% increase.
