The New York Court of Appeals has denied the appeal of Karl Karlsen, the man who admitted that he killed Levi Karlsen, his son, four years ago for insurance money.

In the appeal, Karl stated he was improperly denied an attorney during police interrogation and the statements regarding the circumstances surrounding his son’s death were involuntary. He outlined that his statements to his estranged wife about his son’s death must be precluded under the spousal privilege law. He did not waive his Miranda rights and was denied the counsel’s active aid, John Ciranco, Karlsen’s lawyer, stated, according to a CNY Central article.

However, the Court of Appeals denied the pleas.

Karl, 56, admitted to second-degree murder for Levi’s death in November 2013. Levi died when a pickup truck fell off a jack and onto his chest. The death was considered an accident until late 2012 when Karl made statements to his estranged wife and to the police that he caused the incident.

Prosecutors reported that Karl had clinched a $700,000 life insurance policy on Levi’s life, and received the said amount following his son’s demise. Following his admission, Karl was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. He is also awaiting trial in Calaveras County, California, where he is accused of killing Christina, his first wife.

Like Levi’s death, her 1991 death was originally ruled accidental, yet authorities reopened the case five years ago after Karl’s arrest for the murder of his son. Karl claimed a $200,000 life insurance policy on Christina the month before her death, prosecutors stated.
