Two US mutual insurers have announced separate board-level changes, with Harford Mutual Insurance Group confirming the reelection of four directors and laying the groundwork for a future chair transition, while Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Group has appointed a new board chair to lead the organization through an ambitious growth phase.
Harford Mutual Insurance Group confirmed the reelection of four board members following its Annual Meeting of Policyholders held on May 20, 2026.
Theodore M. Alexander III, Donald C. Fry, Sandra L. Rich, and Abigail E. Smith were all returned to the board. Alexander and Rich were reelected to three-year terms, while Fry — who currently serves as board chair — and Smith were reelected to two-year terms.
The most notable structural development came ahead of the meeting itself, when the Board of Directors approved Rich as chair-elect. Fry's term as board chair is set to end in 2027, at which point Rich is positioned to assume the role.
Harford Mutual, founded in 1842 in Harford County, Maryland, provides commercial property and casualty insurance products and services to a regional market, ending 2025 with more than $446 million in direct written premium sold through independent agents in twelve states and Washington, D.C. The company is rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best.
The board changes come as HMIG works to build on a period of operational recovery. The company's 2025 Annual Statement highlighted a year in which HMIG regained underwriting profitability and strengthened its capital position through strategic execution.
That trajectory followed a period of scrutiny. In September 2025, AM Best revised its outlook on HMIG to negative from stable, citing increased volatility in underwriting profitability and adverse reserve development in recent years, while affirming the group's A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating.
Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Group has appointed Felix Gallagher has chair of its board of directors. Gallagher succeeds Sue Sutter, who has served as board chair since 2024 and concludes 21 years of service on the board.
Gallagher has been a member of the board since 2021 and brings healthcare and workforce management experience to the role. He is the president and owner of PharmServ Solutions, a company specializing in pharmacist placements across the Midwest.
The appointment comes at an active period for the Algona, Iowa-based insurer. Pharmacists Mutual restructured into a limited mutual holding company in January 2026, with the Iowa Insurance Division approving the change to enhance the company's operational and financial flexibility while continuing to provide insurance solutions for specialty healthcare businesses.
Founded in 1909 and headquartered in Algona, Iowa, Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Group is a leading specialty insurer serving healthcare professionals across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, holding a Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) with A.M. Best. The company has also been expanding its professional liability capabilities, announcing a strategic collaboration with Positive Physicians Insurance Company in May 2026 to advance growth within the healthcare professional liability market.
Gallagher will lead the board in supporting Pharmacists Mutual's strategic priorities and its continued focus on delivering specialized insurance and risk management solutions to healthcare professionals nationwide.
