A federal court in Connecticut has sentenced a man to an eight-month prison term for his involvement in staging car crashes to perpetrate insurance fraud.
Jonas Joseph was sentenced Wednesday in New Haven federal court. In June, he was convicted of charges that he was involved in six mock accidents between March 2013 and February 2014.

The six staged accidents resulted in a total loss of over $95,000 to insurers, reported
Portland Press Herald.
Federal prosecutors say that Joseph was part of a group that staged over 50 crashes as far back as 2011.
Most of the crashes were single-vehicle wrecks on remote roads. The drivers, who are a part of the scheme, hit trees or other objects along these remote roads and then left the scene while the policyholder entered the wrecked vehicle and called for help.
