The insurance industry is pitching in to help solve the water crisis currently plaguing the city of Flint, Michigan.

Mayor Karen Weaver announced Sunday that Union Labor Life Insurance Co. pledged $25 million in low-cost loans that will be used to help remove lead pipes and improve water quality. According to Weaver’s statement, the funding “means that we can move forward to remove more lead lines and renew Flint’s infrastructure.”

“I am very grateful to ULLICO and the American Federation of Teachers for putting this idea crafted at the Clinton Global Initiative into action in our community,” Weaver said.

The loans will go toward Weaver’s Fast Start initiative that is designed to replace all lead service lines in the city. The first residential lead pipe removal as part of the program took place Friday, March 4.

The water problems in Flint began after the city switched its water supply from the Detroit system to the Flint River in 2014 as a way to save money.
