Executives with Liberty Mutual Insurance gathered last week for a special groundbreaking ceremony for the company’s new headquarters in Plano, Texas.

The campus, which is being built by KDC Developers, comprises a $325 million expansion project and is expected to be completed in 2017. The project will bring more than 4,000 employees to Plano and give Liberty Mutual an opportunity for further growth.

“Today is a very special day for us as we break new ground on our first significant new campus outside of the Northeast,” said David H. Long, Liberty Mutual chairman and CEO. “It comes from an extensive and rigorous review resulting in the indisputable conclusion that Plano is the place for Liberty Mutual to grow. Its welcoming business environment, beautiful neighborhoods, top-rated schools and talented people made it an obvious choice for us.”

The 19-story building is reported to feature an open-floor plan with a dependence on natural light, 20% more energy efficient than the typical modern office.

The campus will use sustainable green resources and materials, and plans to employ energy-efficiency and water-conservation methods in its development.

The new building will be Liberty Mutual’s eighth building in the country to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for its green building design.

The groundbreaking comes after the opening of a call center for the insurer along the nearby Dallas North Tollway.
