Senior citizens and other Medicare beneficiaries in Louisiana saved nearly $1 million during the recent open enrolment period for the state’s Senior Health Insurance Information program (SHIIP).

According to the Louisiana Department of Insurance, SHIIP counsellors helped more than 10,000 beneficiaries save money by reviewing their Medicare plan options and assisting them in choosing a the plan that best suits their needs.

“We realize that many folks on Medicare live on a tight budget, so we want to make sure that they select the best plan for them and help them use their Medicare coverage most effectively,” said Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon.

“Counsellors also work with beneficiaries to determine if they qualify for any programs that could help with the cost of expenses including prescription drugs, co-pays and medical devices,” Donelon added.

SHIIP provides Medicare beneficiaries in Louisiana with objective, free and unbiased information and counselling to help them better understand their options, rights and benefits.

Housed at the Louisiana Department of Insurance, the program has also trained counsellors across the state. Medicare beneficiaries can consult SHIIP counsellors online and through phone.
