The Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA) has launched a scholarship-funded Insurance Career Pathway program as independent agencies confront an intensifying talent crunch in the property and casualty (P&C) market.
The initiative is designed to recruit, train and license new entrants to the sector and connect graduates with open roles at MAIA member agencies.
MAIA represents nearly 1,000 independent agencies and about 9,000 employees statewide, making it a key voice for the Bay State's distribution network.
“Finding and developing new talent is a top priority for our industry,” said Nick Fyntrilakis, president and CEO of MAIA. “The Insurance Career Pathway program introduces motivated individuals to insurance careers while helping MAIA member agencies connect with trained, entry-level professionals who are ready to contribute from day one.”
Massachusetts’ P&C marketplace has grown into one of the state’s largest industries by output and employment, supported by strong personal auto and homeowners' sectors and a dense independent agency footprint.
Nationally, US P&C insurers have surpassed $1 trillion in direct premiums written, with independent agents placing a majority of that business and dominating commercial lines distribution. At the same time, industry studies indicated that roughly half of the US insurance workforce could retire by the late 2030s, implying hundreds of thousands of vacancies over the next decade.
Many younger workers remain only vaguely aware of insurance career paths, and surveys continue to flag lingering perceptions of the sector as opaque or “traditional” compared with other financial services and tech roles.
Against that backdrop, MAIA’s initiative is aimed at drawing in candidates who might not otherwise consider insurance, particularly at the entry level in personal lines.
The Insurance Career Pathway is structured as a full scholarship program for individuals not currently working in insurance who are seeking a stable, professional path in personal lines. Participants receive tuition coverage valued at $2,000, one attempt at the Massachusetts Property & Casualty licensing exam, foundational agency training and support as they move through the curriculum.
Those accepted complete MAIA’s New Agent Training alongside P&C licensing preparation and agency operations fundamentals, with additional professional development and job-readiness coaching. The first class begins Feb. 17, with additional intakes to follow on a rolling basis. The scholarship also covers tuition, course materials and state exam fees.
Over 60 hours of blended live and on-demand instruction, participants are introduced to core personal lines topics including homeowners, condominium and auto coverages and endorsements, as well as personal umbrella policies. The program also covers Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles procedures, agency operations and workflows, and professional expectations in an independent agency setting.
A notable focus is on Agency Management System (AMS) fundamentals, including exposure to platforms such as Applied Epic and AMS360, which underpin daily operations in many independent agencies. MAIA positioned this systems training as critical to graduates’ ability to be productive quickly in front- and back-office roles.
Upon completion of the program and licensing requirements, MAIA will provide placement support and make graduates visible to member agencies seeking trained, entry-level staff. The association emphasizes that employment is not guaranteed, but argues that the program is closely aligned with the skills agencies say they need.
“This is a win-win,” added Fyntrilakis. “Participants gain a supported entry into a rewarding field, and agencies gain access to trained, licensed, and industry-ready talent.”
