Major insurer names new chief operations officer

The new COO of the top insurance group will lead all underwriting, claims and service delivery functions across the company

Prudential Financial has appointed a new chief operations officer of its insurance arm, Prudential Group Insurance.

The company announced Monday that David Zona will take over the role, leading all underwriting, claims and service delivery functions across the insurance unit. He is also responsible for developing and implementing strategies to optimize service, profitability and risk management, Prudential said.

Zona has a long history in the insurance industry. Prior to joining Prudential, he served as senior vice president with Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty, the global industrial insurer of Allianz Group. He has also served as Senior Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer at Fireman’s Fund Insurance.

He has held additional leadership positions with Nationwide Insurance and American International Group.

Zona is a life-long industry veteran, having obtained his Master of Science in Risk Management & Insurance from Georgia State University. He also holds an MBA from Duke University and his bachelor’s from the University of Florida.

Prudential Group Insurance President Andrew Sullivan welcomed Zona, saying his background will help enrich the group going forward.

“David’s broad organizational leadership experience, approach to risk portfolio management and success delivering significant improvements leveraging predictive analytics is a tremendous asset to our business,” Sullivan said.

Prudential’s insurance arm manufactures and distributes a full range of group life, long-term and short-term disability and corporate and trust-owned life insurance in the US. They are primarily acive in the employee and membership benefit plan field, also administering critical illness, accident, accidental death and dismemberment and other ancillary coverages and provides plan administrative services in connection with insurance coverages.

It has traditionally moved into difficult-to-place sectors, including a recent expansion in life insurance to people with HIV.
