Markel announces key names for global strategy, national markets teams

Markel International has announced the appointment of Simon Wilson as managing executive of global strategy for insurance operations for Markel Corporation. Henrick Bjornstad will assume the role of managing director of Markel International’s national markets division.

Wilson, currently managing director of national markets, will assume his new role January 01. He will be based in Richmond, Va., and will report to Robert Cox, president and chief operating officer for insurance operations at Markel Corporation. Wilson will be responsible for global strategy teams in both Richmond and London. He will remain on the Markel International board.

In addition, the company has announced that John Enright, strategy and development executive, will be appointed head of strategy for Markel International, assuming responsibility for the company’s London-based strategy team. Enright will report to Wilson.

“Simon has excelled in every role he has taken on since joining Markel in 2010,” said William Stovin, president of Markel International. “Under his management over the last five years, the national markets division has become a fast-growing and profitable multinational enterprise, and so we look forward to seeing his achievements in this new global role, with John on the ground in London to support.”

Bjornstad is currently head of strategy for insurance operations at Markel Corporation. In his new role as managing director of Markel International’s national markets division, he will be based in London and will report to Stovin.

“Henrik has done an outstanding job of setting up and developing an invaluable strategy function for Markel, and we’ve no doubt that with his new focus on national markets, the division will continue to grow,” Stovin said.
