Hoping to ensure its continued progress and growth toward a more diverse staff, one Missouri insurance group is staffing out.

Columbia, Missouri-based Shelter Insurance announced this month the appointment of Brian Jones as manager of diversity and inclusion.

Jones, who joined Shelter four years ago as a recruiting and development specialist in Indiana, moved to the home office in Columbia to become a training and development specialist. He has an extensive background in recruiting, development and management, and has served in similar positions with Chase Investment Services, the Centennial Group and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

His appointment comes a year after Shelter established a corporate diversity committee and a strategic diversity and inclusion plan for the group. Shelter hopes that with Jones’ hire, the work of that committee will successfully move forward.

“It’s a real benefit to have an individual focused on fulfilling our Diversity Mission Statement on a daily basis,” said Stacye Smith, Shelter’s director of human resources. “We have a number of ongoing initiatives that are really making a difference at Shelter and Brian is going to help us make those even stronger.”

Jones serves on Shelter’s corporate diversity committee and is a member of the leadership committee for the company’s Emerging Professionals Network. He was also been a Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana program and was a founder of Minority Forum.

He expressed excitement about his latest opportunity to “take active steps” to help Shelter “continue to grow as a great corporate citizen.”

“I’m truly humbled that they have chosen me for such an important role and can’t wait to work with the outstanding employees at Shelter Insurance to make a difference in the communities we serve,” Jones said.
