Missouri loses insurance trailblazer

C Donald Ainsworth has died at the age of 95. Ainsworth directed the Missouri Department of Insurance from 1981 to 1985. He founded Ainsworth Insurance Service in 1955, which 20 years later merged with Alexander & Alexander, where he worked until being appointed insurance director by then MO Governor Christopher Bond.

As insurance director, he pushed for no-fault auto insurance and Mandatory auto insurance in the state. After leaving that position, he accepted a position at Safety National Casualty Corporation, serving on the board into his 90s.

Insurance did not define his life, though. He worked as an FBI agent before serving with a cryptography unit in the US Navy. He also held various volunteer and political positons, including serving on the Kirkwood, MO city council, and as president of the Kirkwood Chamber of Commerce. He held a law degree from Washington University.

His death was attributed to pneumonia. He is survived by a spouse, two children, a stepchild and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.
