Insurance giant Nationwide has announced the appointment of George Williams (pictured) as the new head of its small market commercial lines business.

With a background in commercial lines, excess and surplus, and specialty areas, Williams steps into the role with over two decades of experience in the industry. He transitions from his previous position within Nationwide as the chief operating officer for commercial lines.

Before joining Nationwide in December 2021, Williams played a key role at Guy Carpenter as head of global client support services.

His career also includes serving as COO of AIG’s North American General Insurance division, where he was responsible for global small and middle market enterprises across the US, UK, Southeast Asia, and Germany. Additionally, Williams managed AIG’s business portfolio in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland as general manager.

Russ Johnston, Nationwide’s president of commercial lines, excess & surplus, specialty, emphasized the unique blend of skills required for the position.

“Leading a small commercial platform requires a combination of underwriting, technology, operational excellence, and customer focus,” Johnston said. “George has a proven background in these areas that will enable us to drive this important business forward for Nationwide.”

“I’m excited to lead small market commercial lines for Nationwide as we focus on a specialized appetite and a streamlined digital experience for our agents,” Williams said. “Like most of the P&C market, we’ve taken actions to improve performance, and we are committed to small commercial customers who value protection from a trusted brand.”

Williams has already started his duties in the new position, Nationwide confirmed. Meanwhile, the insurance giant also recently reported another year of record sales, its third in a row.
