The office of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced this week that the state Department of Financial Services is allowing victims of domestic violence to enroll in coverage even outside the Nov. 1-Jan.31 open enrollment period.

According to the department, the year-round enrollment period for individual plans applies to coverage both on and off the exchange.

Insurers may ask applicants to confirm their eligibility for the special enrollment period, the governor’s office added.

The enrollment feature applies to any member of a household who is a victim of domestic violence, said an article on buffalonews.com. This includes unmarried and dependent victims, as well as spousal abandonment victims.

Those applications received by the 15th of each month will have their coverage in effect on the first day of the succeeding month. Applications filed after the 15th will take effect on the first day of the month following the next.
