Stories of job-hopping millennials have shown that, sometimes, moving from company to company can increase pay and career prospects over a lifetime. Other times, however, the right fit comes first.

That seems to be the case with Cory Smith, who has been with Central Insurance Agency in Carrington, North Dakota since he began his insurance career in 1992. Specializing in property/casualty lines, Smith works with four other people to write coverage for personal, commercial and crop insurance needs.

And this year, he was named 2016 Agent of the Year at the Professional Insurance Agents of North Dakota convention in Bismarck.

The award, which is presented by the insurance association The 1752 Club, recognizes agents who exhibit superior customer service, knowledge, professionalism and commitment to the insurance industry, according to the Jamestown Sun.

Like many others, Smith grew up in the insurance industry. His parents, Ed and Peggy Smith, owned Central Insurance Agency from 1965 to 2000. It took him a few years to return to his roots, however.

After graduating from Valley City State University in 1987 with a major in business administration and a minor in human resources management, Cory spent five years opening and managing several Foot Locker stores around the country.

In 1992, however, he moved back to his hometown of Carrington and began his career in insurance.

Smith, who also works as a licensed real estate broker, has two children with his wife, Cassie.
