Northwestern Mutual has announced the appointment of Randolph W. Melville (pictured) to its board of directors. Melville was the senior vice president and general manager of the Western Division of Frito-Lay North America, the $14 billion snack-food unit of PepsiCo, until his retirement in 2017.

“Randy has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities businesses face in sales distribution, finance, human resources and strategic planning,” said John E. Schlifske, chairman, president and CEO of Northwestern Mutual. “We value his insights as we develop and grow our team of 9,000-plus financial professionals across the US.”

Melville’s work has been widely recognized by industry organizations and trade publications. In 2009, Black Enterprise magazine named him as one of its “100 Most Powerful Executives in Corporate America.” The Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the US Naval Academy and Harvard Business Review named him a recipient of their inaugural Leadership Excellence Award. Prior to his more than two-decade tenure at Frito-Lay, Melville served as a senior vice president at Maytag Corporation. He also held various sales and marketing leadership roles at Proctor & Gamble Corporation.

Melville currently serves as the lead independent director on the board of Saia, a trucking and logistics company.
