In an effort to get better connected with the insurance community, the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance has launched a few new initiatives in recent months to increase public communication.

Last week, the state’s insurance commissioner, Teresa Miller, announced the department has launched both a Twitter handle and a Facebook site.

“Adding a presence on social media gives the department a great opportunity to increase consumer outreach and serve as an active educator on issues that may impact consumers,” Miller said in a statement. “I am extremely excited that the Insurance Department is now able to reach consumers and industry stakeholders in a new way.”

This new social media initiative comes just a few months after the department debuted a targeted newsletter on the insurance industry. The monthly electronic newsletter, called PA Insurance Insight, is aiming to serve as a useful summary of industry activity. The government organization also recently redesigned its website in an effort to be more accessible.

Department press secretary Ron Ruman said that they were aware of other states growing their stable of communications outlets and recognized the need to expand.

“The purpose is to better communicate,” Ruman said. “I think these changes will provide better avenues for producers to stay up with the priorities of the department.”
