Nationwide subsidiary and specialty insurer Scottsdale Insurance Company announced Wednesday the addition of David Nelson as leader of its contract underwriting division.

Nelson, who has been with Scottsdale since 1991, will oversee business the company writes with managing general agents and independent agents.

Previously, Nelson served as CFO for the Scottsdale Insurance Group of Companies, Nationwide Agribusiness and Nationwide National Partners. As CFO, Nelson retained financial oversight for $3.8 billion of annual operating revenue and managed staff in Scottsdale, Des Moines and New York City.

Scottsdale Insurance President Mike Miller praised Nelson’s experience and investment in the company.

“David’s strong strategic planning skills, understanding of the Contract book, relationships with our customers, and knowledge of our industry will serve him well in this role,” Miller said in a statement. “He has played key roles in diversifying our portfolio with startups such as Freedom Specialty, Minnesota Motor Carriers and Nationwide Private Client.

“His expertise has been instrumental in influencing the expansion of our product offerings.”

Nelson has greeted his new appointment with enthusiasm.

“I’m looking forward to being part of the continued growth and success of contract underwriting,” Nelson said.
