A leading specialty insurance company and Lloyd’s of London coverholder is marking its 40th anniversary this month.

NAS Insurance was founded in September 1975 when a leading Lloyd’s underwriter decided to explore opportunities in providing legal defense coverage to business owners. Ed Robin, chairman of NAS, was tapped for the role and the business and partnership has grown ever since, today offering a broad range of professional and management liability insurance products in all 50 states.

“I am thrilled to see how our business has grown over the years,” said Robin. “We always had the spirit of doing things differently and a focus on creating innovative products. That strategy continues to be successful and keeps us on our toes.”

Indeed, it has helped the Encino, California-based company grow into a national operation with offices in Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston and Atlanta. NAS now employs 136 people – a far cry from the team of eight that worked together in 1994.

Particularly successful for NAS is a focus on studying the cyber insurance market and developing market-leading products as technological risks evolve.

“Cyber crime is a huge risk for companies and a big part of what’s fueling demand for our services,” said Jill Linhardt, Ed’s daughter and executive vice president for NAS. “Not only as an insurance underwriter, but as advisors to companies on how to effectively respond to a breach and how to help companies be better prepared and avoid an incident.”

NAS’s success had not gone unnoticed. Last year, the company attracted a strategic investment from Tokio Marine Kiln of London, and the firm now owns a 49% stake in NAS.

But the company has no intention of resting on its laurels, says Richard Robin, Ed’s son and CEO of NAS Insurance since 2009.
“We’re expanding to meet market demand for our products and to ensure NAS continues to provide great service to our clients,” Richard Robin said. “We have an amazing team of people here in Encino and are working hard to ensure that employees in our new offices fit with our culture and feel connected to our mission.”
