Governor Paul R. LePage and the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation published a guide for Maine residents to help them purchase automobiles in time for the Presidents’ Day sales sweeping the state.

The 32-page guide, entitled The Downeaster Common Sense Guide: Automobile Buying and Financing, was made available free-of-charge on both paperback and digital form.

“Maine consumers are fortunate to have many reputable auto dealers throughout the state who treat customers very well and contribute much to our communities,” stated LePage. “Purchasing a car or truck, however, can be complicated. This new guide—the latest in a Downeaster series of consumer protection publications—provides important information and guidance to assist buyers in making sound financial decisions when considering a new vehicle.”

“This new guide will help consumers become more comfortable with auto buying and financing by explaining the process in an easy to understand format,” said Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection Principal Examiner and co-author of the guide David Leach.

“The thought of buying a new or used car or truck can be a challenging process involving negotiation on not only the purchase vehicle, but oftentimes a trade-in as well. This booklet will help Maine consumers to better understand how to successfully negotiate to get their best price, and how to shop for the lowest loan rate if they choose to finance a portion of their purchase.”

One of the topics covered by the guide is the consideration of options such as extended warranty programs and credit insurance.
