Julie Mix McPeak, commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI), was named vice president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). She was chosen after a special election was held Feb. 7 to determine the new president of the association following former Kentucky Insurance Commissioner Sharon P. Clark’s departure.

Previously, McPeak served as NAIC’s Secretary-Treasurer.

“It is a tremendous honor and privilege to represent the State of Tennessee as an NAIC officer,” said McPeak. “As Tennessee’s Insurance Commissioner, I am committed to the responsible regulation of the insurance industry and consumer protection. I will bring that same level commitment to my new leadership role in the NAIC.”

McPeak has been an active member of NAIC for 20 years, serving on the executive committee since 2013. She was previously the lead insurance regulator of Kentucky, and was appointed as TDCI’s commissioner by Governor Bill Haslam in 2011. She was later reappointed for the same position in 2015.

As TDCI’s commissioner, McPeak served as the chief regulator of the insurance and securities industries of the state of Tennessee, as well as the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

She has more than 20 years of legal and administrative experience in state government. Notably, she is the first woman to serve as chief insurance regulator in more than one state.

McPeak is also an executive committee member of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), and an associate of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI).
