The Insurance Council of Texas announced April 12 that the damage resulting from the series of hailstorms that struck the region last month could cost over $1 billion.

The council also revealed that severe hail and strong winds battered parts of North Texas just recently, causing “hundreds of millions of dollars in damage” in cities located north of Dallas.

The March 16 hailstorm caused about $600 million in insured losses to property in Fort Worth and Arlington.

The council additionally remarked that claims related to the March 23 hailstorm are still coming in; the weather event was estimated to have caused $700 in losses.

“In each storm, more than 40,000 vehicles were damaged,” the council revealed in a statement. “Last night's hail storm was so destructive that many vehicles were totaled, and homes and apartment complexes were heavily damaged.”

The council cited data from the National Weather Service that put Texas ahead of the other states in terms of number of hail events the previous year—783 in total. NWS data also revealed that the state posted a record 240 tornadoes last year.
