Risk managers are often the most interesting people in any insurance conversation, and the least heard. They live on the buy side of a relationship that largely talks to itself, and their perspective on what’s working, what isn’t, and what the industry keeps missing is rarely the one that makes it to the main stage.

Randal Maestas (pictured), senior manager of corporate insurance at The Wonderful Company, is changing that at InsuranceFest this July. He arrives with a clear sense of what he wants to get out of the event - and what he’s bringing to it.

“I’m looking forward to connecting with other risk leaders and market partners at this iconic venue,” Maestas said. “Let’s have a candid conversation about what’s actually driving progress in our industry. I’ll share what I’m prioritizing, and bring ideas to reduce friction, improve outcomes, and create real value.”

Three things in that quote deserve attention. First: candid. Maestas isn’t interested in the polished version of this conversation. Second: what’s actually driving progress. The word “actually” is doing real work there - he’s drawing a line between what sounds good and what moves the needle. Third: reduce friction. In a field where the buyer’s experience of insurance often involves more friction than it should, hearing a sophisticated corporate buyer commit to working on it publicly is meaningful.

The Wonderful Company - the agricultural conglomerate behind brands like POM Wonderful, FIJI Water, and Wonderful Pistachios - is exactly the kind of organization that tests the limits of what the commercial insurance market can do. Maestas manages that complexity every day. He’s not speaking at InsuranceFest because he has the answers. He’s speaking because he has the questions - and he’s found the right room to ask them.
