Nationwide’s personal lines carrier has teamed up with Burns & Wilcox to donate nearly $50,000 to charitable organizations benefiting Detroit-area youth.

The two insurers gave $24,684 each to Living Arts and City Year Detroit through a Partners in Giving donation. The grants will help fund youth arts programs and help students and schools succeed.

Jim Pedersen, president of Nationwide Private Client, said the insurer’s charitable work gives it a unique edge with its target demographic – affluent markets.

“People care deeply about organizations with a social mission. They are more likely to support businesses that share their commitment to making a difference,” Pedersen said in a statement. “Partners in Giving enables Private Client agents to direct donations to one of the charitable organizations we support, with an emphasis on strengthening our communities and improving people’s lives.”

Nationwide Private Client and Burns & Wilcox each matched contributions made by Michigan-based Burns & Wilcox employees on top of the initial $30,000 donation by Nationwide Private Client. As a result, the partners raised nearly $20,000 or more for the local Detroit nonprofits.

“Philanthropy is a core commitment of Burns & Wilcox. We have supported the Detroit community through charitable investments since 1969,” says Alan Jay Kaufman, chairman, president and CEO, H.W. Kaufman Financial Group and Burns & Wilcox.

“We are honored to be chosen by Nationwide Private Client and Burns & Wilcox for their charitable donation,” says Michallene Thacker-Mann, director of corporate and foundation partnerships, City Year Detroit. “This generous support ensures that the City Year Detroit AmeriCorps members can continue to provide the critical support students need to succeed.”

“Living Arts is grateful for this contribution,” says Cara Graninger, executive director, Living Arts. “It is especially meaningful this year, as we are expanding our services to improve kindergarten readiness among Detroit children and increasing engagement with young students after school is dismissed.”

To date, $141,456 has been donated in Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, and Washington through the Private Client Partners in Giving program. Nationwide Private Client has committed an additional $385,000 in Partners in Giving charitable donations for distribution throughout 2015 and 2016.
