Big data equals big trouble, or at leas it can. In a world where practically every business collects customer data there is the potential of data being stolen and used to harm or embarrass people who have done nothing more nefarious than, say, purchase insurance.

You probably already take customer data, and the need to protect it, seriously. If you are doing business in Wisconsin, you can turn to the office of the Commissioner of Insurance for guidance on what you need to do in the event your data is compromised.

Wisconsin insurance businesses are required to notify the department as soon as possible, but always within 10 days of discovering a breach of personal data.

Personal data is defined as a person’s name if it is linked to a social security number, driver’s license number, state identification number, account number of any kind or such biometric data as fingerprints.

Notification must go to Jo LeDuc, senior insurance examiner, office of the Commissioner of Insurance, Box 787, Madison WI 53707-787, or to [email protected].

For more information, look for a bulletin issued December 4, 2006 and available on the department’s website.
