Ken Selzer, Kansas Insurance Commissioner, announced this month that he has approved the lower rates proposed by the National Council on Compensation Insurance. Around 65,000 businesses in Kansas will pay less for workers’ compensation coverage next year as a result.

Rates will decrease by 11.6% for businesses obtaining their insurance in the marketplace and 10.4% for companies acquiring a state plan for high-risk businesses.

The decline in rates is the result of a drop in high-cost claims from injured workers, as well as a greater awareness of safety issues among workers, said Bob Hanson, Insurance Department spokesman.

The National Council proposed the lower rates after carefully analyzing workers’ compensation data among the state’s various businesses.
