Zurich US has appointed 25-year industry veteran Alex Wells (pictured, left) as its new chief executive officer, stepping in to lead the commercial insurance provider following the departure of Sierra Signorelli.
Wells, who led Zurich's largest domestic unit to double-digit growth over the past six years, takes over effective immediately, subject to customary regulatory approvals. The transition also triggered a key internal promotion, with 18-year Zurich veteran John Diaz (pictured, right) named president of US Middle Market, Programs, Direct Markets and Captives.
The rapid succession underscores Zurich’s focus on execution and continuity across its North American commercial insurance operations amidst evolving market dynamics.
Wells joined Zurich in 2020 after holding senior commercial insurance roles at Chubb and ACE. Based out of Zurich US headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois, he previously led the carrier's Middle Market, Programs, Captives, and Direct Markets division—the largest business unit within Zurich US.
During his tenure leading the midmarket division, Wells expanded the carrier's underwriting footprint across the country, advanced digital risk engineering tools for field underwriters, and broadened specialized risk solutions for commercial policyholders.
"Alex has deep expertise in large global accounts and midmarket customers, wholesale casualty and specialty verticals, and he has managed different distribution models," said Mario Greco, group CEO of Zurich Insurance Group. "He has a strong track record of delivering results, developing talent and helping teams perform at their best."
Speaking on his appointment, Wells emphasized that the carrier's broader distribution and underwriting strategy remains locked in.
"Our focus remains unchanged: delivering for customers, supporting our distribution partners and executing with discipline in the market," he said.
Following Wells' elevation, Zurich acted swiftly to fill the top spot at its midmarket unit. John Diaz moves back to the Middle Market business—a division he helped shape during prior stints as chief operating officer and head of underwriting, while temporarily retaining his post as president of customer and distribution management until a successor is named.
Diaz, based in New York City, joined Zurich in 2008 following leadership roles in finance, operations, and distribution at AIG. He brings deep commercial casualty underwriting experience back to the core business unit.
"John is a natural choice to lead US Middle Market," Wells commented. "He worked alongside me on the Middle Market leadership team during years of rapid growth, helping build the foundation for the successful business we have today."
The leadership overhaul signals that Zurich US plans to maintain its aggressive momentum across its commercial lines while leaning heavily on internal executive talent to preserve key broker and distribution relationships.
For Canadian commercial insurance brokers managing cross-border programs, leadership shifts within Zurich US hold strategic relevance. Zurich Canada operates closely alongside its US counterparts to service mid-market and large corporate policyholders with operations spanning the US–Canada border.
With Diaz returning to head US Middle Market and Programs, Canadian brokers placing complex multi-jurisdictional liability, property, and captive coverage can expect continuity in risk appetite and distribution strategy across the North American commercial corridor.
