Aon has provided an estimate for the insured losses from the storms experienced in the US and Canada during the third weekend of August 2024.

The global insurance brokerage expects “hundreds of millions of dollars” in insured losses from the intense rains that battered the northeast US and southeast Canada in the middle of the month, according to an AM Best report.

Impacted areas included Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. In Canada, cities like Mississauga were hit by the severe rainstorm.

“From August 17 to 18, rainfall amounts varied across Mississauga with some areas of the city seeing as little as 6.2mm and the hardest hit areas receiving 170mm,” the city noted previously. “Heavy rainfall caused high water levels and localized flooding on roads, along creeks, rivers, and streams.”

The recent severe weather came on the heels of the flash flooding that struck Toronto and other areas of southern Ontario on July 15 and 16.

In the US, historic rainfall was recorded in Connecticut’s Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven Counties and New York’s Long Island on August 18 and 19.

“My administration is working diligently to provide resources for Long Island communities affected by recent severe weather,” Governor Kathy Hochul stated at the time. “As families and businesses look to rebuild, we are making every effort to help Suffolk County residents get the assistance they need.”

According to the New York State Weather Risk Communication Center, the NYS Mesonet’s Stony Brook site in western Suffolk County recorded 9.4 inches of rain within a span of 24 hours, with rainfall totals representing a one-in-1000-year event at the location.
