Drought expected over Western US going into fall

Dry weather to continue over the West as fall comes in

Wildfire season will peak going into September in California and Western US as fall season comes in, meteorologists said in a recent report.

The lack of snow and rain in the past winter in the said areas will result in sustained drought conditions, which will continue to increase the risk of damaging wildfires. Low moisture conditions will cause tinder dry vegetation to serve as fuel for new and existing wildfires.

"It's bad now and it's only going to get worse," AccuWeather expert long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said.

Santa Ana winds will also exacerbate existing fires, causing them to spread. The Southwest will likewise experience protracted periods of dryness, despite some early monsoon rains.

“We still may have another spurt of moisture here and there into early September in eastern parts of Utah, but other than that, those areas will start to dry out as well by middle fall," Pastelok added.
