Louisiana residents are yet again picking up the pieces of tornado damage, and this time around the Property and Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) says they should be wiser in dealing with rogue contractors.

“Unfortunately, there are some contractors or vendors who take advantage of consumers after storms, which is why we encourage homeowners to contact their insurer, agent or local Better Business Bureau to obtain references on potential contractors before starting any repairs,” Joe Woods, PCI vice president of state government relations, said.

Woods also noted in a statement, “We know that the overwhelming majority of contractors are honest. However, you still need to exercise caution as it will save a lot of time, money and frustration…”

Among others, PCI said it is best to check references before entering into agreements with contractors. Also, the organization said that contractors who try to rush you should be a red flag especially for emergency or temporary repairs.

In paying for services, the insurers also said it is more prudent not to pay for work up front so you’ll have the chance to inspect the work and determine whether you’re satisfied with the quality.

Further, PCI said to always pay with a check or credit card where possible.
