Catastrophe & Flood

Meteorologists warned against air and road travel this week as thunderstorms and attendant damage is expected to hit the Midwest mid-week before pounding the Central Plains and mid-Mississippi Valley before the weekend.

Warnings were raised over Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Des Moines and Omaha, Nebraska; Springfield and Chicago, Illinois; Fort Wayne and Gary, Indiana; Grand Rapids, Michigan; St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri; and Topeka, Kansas.

Residents in these areas can expect poor visibility, strong turbulence and sudden wind shear as a result of the thunderstorms, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.

The storms will peak with extreme winds and flash floods, which will turn into a flood threat. An inch or two of rain will inundate affected areas.
