Tornadoes expected in Upper Midwest

Catastrophe & Flood

By Allie Sanchez

Severe weather is expected to move to the Upper Midwest from the Northern Plains in the middle of the week.

Some of the strongest storms are expected to create short lived tornadoes, meteorologists report. Wind gusts could reach more than 70 mph.

AccuWeather storm warning meteorologist Alex Avalos cautioned that there will be strong winds, hail, and frequent lightning. He added that torrential downpours could result in flash flooding in some areas.

Bismarck, North Dakota, and Rapid City, South Dakota are the most prone to severe weather on Wednesday, reports further said.

Isolated storms will also extend from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Fargo, North Dakota, and Huron, South Dakota; and reach parts of eastern Minnesota to eastern South Dakota during later Wednesday night, possibly including the Minneapolis area.

"On Thursday, a second line of storms will likely develop over the Upper Midwest," Avalos added.

The contrary weather will protract on Thursday and expand to parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan.
Des Moines, Iowa; Madison, Wisconsin; Omaha, Nebraska; Marquette, Michigan; Milwaukee and Chicago will also be at risk for ugly weather during Thursday afternoon and night.
