One of two active Atlantic tropical systems poses a significant threat to Florida over the next 10 days as it could develop into a full blown hurricane.
The disturbance could reach Florida with gusty winds, showers and thunderstorms early next week.
Dubbed 99L, the system has the potential to split into two separate tropical depressions late this week.
The system is currently hovering 1,400 miles southeast of Miami and will take a general west to west-northwest path to Puerto Rico and further towards Hispaniola midweek.
"99L has the potential to become very well-organized over the Bahamas, just east of Florida this weekend," AccuWeather hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski noted.
If the system remains static over Miami, it can gather momentum and develop into a powerful hurricane.
"The last hurricane to strike the Florida Peninsula was Wilma during October 2005. The last hurricane to strike the Florida Peninsula during August was Katrina in 2005; Katrina was also the last hurricane to strike the Florida Peninsula from a south easterly direction," Kottlowski stated.
