Beacon Mutual Insurance Company said it is notifying affected individuals after completing an investigation into a data security incident that resulted in an unauthorized person gaining access to parts of its computer network and acquiring copies of certain files.

The insurer said it first learned of the activity on January 14, 2026, and immediately took steps to contain it, launch an investigation and notify law enforcement. According to Beacon Mutual, the investigation later found that an unauthorized party had access to some of its systems between January 7 and 14, 2026.

Following the forensic investigation, the company said it carried out what it described as a comprehensive and time-intensive review of the files involved. That review determined that one or more of the affected files contained a person’s first name or first initial and last name together with one or more sensitive data elements. These may have included Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account numbers, health insurance information and medical treatment information.

Customers notified of breach

Beacon Mutual said it began mailing notification letters earlier this week to people whose personal information was involved in the incident. The company has also set up a dedicated call cent for affected individuals and said those who believe their information may have been involved can seek further information by phone. Additional details are also available through the company’s website.

In its notice, Beacon Mutual urged affected individuals to remain vigilant by regularly reviewing credit reports and financial account statements for suspicious or unauthorised activity. The company advised anyone who notices transactions or account activity they do not recognize to contact the relevant financial institution immediately.

The insurer said it regrets any inconvenience caused to policyholders, partners and other stakeholders and added that it has already taken steps to strengthen the security of its computer network. It also said additional measures will continue to be implemented to help prevent a similar incident from happening again.

The disclosure comes as insurers and other financial services firms face growing scrutiny over cyber risk, incident response and the protection of sensitive personal data. For Beacon Mutual, the immediate focus now appears to be on notification, customer support and reinforcing network security following the breach.
