An attempt to sell Yahoo login credentials in the black market has revealed a deeper data breach of technology portal Yahoo’s systems.

Yahoo confirmed a data breach affecting 500 million users, as the hacker known as “peace_of_mind”, attempted to sell login information in a black market site.

The hacker handed over a sample of the data, which appeared to be authentic, but a source from Yahoo said there is no evidence that the information is legitmate.

Further investigation into the matter revealed that Yahoo’s data systems were also hacked in 2014.

Flashpoint cybercrime analyst Vitali Kremez said the two incidents are probably discrete from each other. The hacker was said to be selling circa 2012 data, and not 2014.

Kremez added that “peace_of_mind” advertised data for 200 million accounts for sale, which is far below the 500 million accounts said to have been compromised by the breach.
